At last year’s 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Trump didn’t mince words. In a speech stripped of diplomatic niceties, he accused the world’s premier international institution of abandoning its founding purpose: to maintain peace, protect human rights, and hold aggressors accountable.

“Not only is the U.N. not solving the problems it should; too often it’s actually creating new problems for us to solve,” he said. “The U.N. has such tremendous potential, but it’s not even coming close to living up to that potential.”

His comments landed hard, particularly after the U.N.’s muted role in mediating the Gaza ceasefire and the hostage return earlier this month. The question lingered: Has the United Nations failed its mission, or have we simply forgotten what it’s still capable of?
