If billions in federal education dollars are frozen for elite universities, where should that money go? A growing number of voices are calling for a significant shift in education funding priorities — one that redirects support toward public colleges, community institutions, and underserved regions that have seen steady declines in per-student investment over the last two decades.

“Public universities and community colleges are the backbone of American education,” said John Thomas, managing director of the strategic advocacy firm Nestpoint Associates. “They train the workforce and support communities without the vast financial resources elite institutions have access to.”
